An anarchist online group sets out to assassinate the corporate elites they believe have turned culture into a digital nightmare.

Don Barton is the visionary creator of Greenhouse, a popular immersive game where millions play at "saving the environment" in the surreal digital landscapes of the metaverse. Now retired to his plutocratic wealth, he learns his teen son, a gifted gamer, has suddenly gone missing, having joined a terrorist group led by a mysterious young woman, Eris, a former cryptocurrency trader. She's on a mission to destroy the world's entertainment and social media platforms and assassinate the corporate elites who run them.
In desperation, Barton roams Greenhouse, the only place his radicalized son will talk to him, learning that the game — his life's work — is on the terrorist hit list. And both his life and his son's are in danger.

Gaudet (Skyroom) offers an eerie glimpse into an all too believable near-future in this cyberpunk outing. Don Barton originally created the hit game Greenhouse, where players must save the environment, to inspire people to help make the world a better place. Instead, the game proves so addictive that it consumes players totally, drawing them into the virtual world. As its popularity grows and more people, including politicians and society’s elite, get hooked, the real world is left to the ravages of ongoing climate catastrophe. One of the most jacked in is Don’s own teenage son, Tony, who goes missing at the start of the book. His disappearance is linked to the hacker Eris and her team of ecoterrorists, who hope to dismantle the game from within, sending Don on a desperate quest through cyberspace to get his son back. The plot excites, but the pace is slowed by ever changing narrators pausing to infodump their backstories. Still, this virtual game of cat and mouse will appeal to fans of Ready Player One. Agent: Sam Hiyate, Rights Factory.

Seeking solace from his parents' divorce, Tony takes refuge in the cooperative game Greenhouse (which happens to have been created by his father, Don). Meanwhile Don spends his days trying to connect with Tony, mostly unsuccessfully, and finds that the only thing they have in common is their shared passion for gaming. Tony thrives in the highly designed world of Greenhouse. T he game, centered around the idea of saving the planet from climate destruction, gives Tony a place to put his rage regarding his parents' separation, and is the one place he feels in control. When Tony decides to meet up in person with a gaming acquaintance who goes by the identity Eris, things don't go as planned. Eris isn't who they seem: they never planned to befriend Tony, but wanted to use him as a means to swindle Don out of his millions. Things quickly escalate into a game of chase. Gaudet (SkyRoom, 2022) blurs the line between virtual reality and the real world.
