Mowgli has lived among his wolf brothers for as long as he can remember. Baloo and Bagheera teach him the ways of the jungle, but some animals view him as a threat—or, even worse, as prey. Can Mowgli find a place where he truly belongs?
This abridged retelling is the perfect way to introduce young readers to Mowgli’s life among elephants, giant snakes, and monkeys. The book also includes discussion questions.

Adapted by Powell from Kipling’s The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, this interactive entry in the Seek and Find Classics series invites readers to take part in the unfolding story. In more than a dozen seek-and-find scenes keyed to significant moments in the plot, children are asked to find 10 objects and animals (and Mowgli, of course) in Frenna’s cinematic cartoons. The retro vibe of her artwork at times recalls the Disney adaptation but still offers a distinctive spin on the characters and drama of the tales. Also available: Alice in Wonderland. Ages 8–up. -

These classic stories are presented in unabridged formats. A handful of scratchboard illustrations in addition to a repeating chapter heading spot illustration accompany each story. A ribbon bookmark is attached. The books conclude with some generic open-ended questions.(Copyright 2008 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. All rights reserved.)

These adaptations straightforwardly delineate plot points but sacrifice atmosphere, language, and uniqueness. The resulting retellings are stiff and, in the case of already child-friendly fare like Pinocchio, somewhat superfluous. Spot illustrations are more page-filler than enhancement. Discussion questions and an afterword are appended to each story.(Copyright 2008 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. All rights reserved.)
