In this "fast-paced, juicy read full of flirtation, danger, and lies" (Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author), a single mom goes undercover to investigate a host of disturbing secrets held by the leaders of a local suburban parent-school association, including embezzlement, bribery, adultery, and murder—by the bestselling author of Wish You Were Gone.

Paige Lancaster, single mom and prodigal daughter, has returned to the East Coast from her prestigious, well-paid job in Los Angeles, writing for the smartest detective series on television. Something terrible happened to her back in Hollywood. Okay, two terrible things, one featuring a misplaced tire iron—and now she's broke, homeless, and living with her widowed mother and eight-year-old daughter, Izzy, in her Connecticut hometown.

Paige needs to buckle down and find a new writing gig but first, she meets the movers and shakers of Izzy's school's Parent Booster Association, run by the intimidatingly gorgeous Ainsley Anderson, who just happens to be married to Paige's old high school flame, John.

Then she shows up at the annual Parents and Pinot fundraiser, held at Ainsley and John's dazzling mansion, where she's caught in a compromising position with John, accidentally destroys the guest bathroom, overhears an incriminating conversation, and discovers that her purse has gone missing. And later that night, Ainsley turns up dead at the bottom of her own driveway.

Did she fall? Or was she pushed?

Paige may have only written about detectives, but she is convinced she can handle a little undercover sleuthing. After all, it'll give her an excuse to spend more time with John. Still, she can't help but wonder: could he be capable of murder? Or could one of the PBA members have planned a dastardly crime to reach the top? But the most important question of all: will Paige ever get her life back on track?

Single mom Paige Lancaster, the protagonist of this razor-sharp novel from Scott (Wish You Were Gone), returns to her hometown of Piermont, Conn., with her eight-year-old daughter, Izzy, after being fired from her lucrative screenwriting job in L.A. and a spectacularly violent breakup with her boyfriend. Settling in with her widowed mother, Paige enrolls Izzy in the elementary school she attended and discovers that the cliquish Parent Booster Association runs the school and sometimes its members’ lives. PBA president Ainsley Anderson and her three board members rule the PBA with an iron hand, demanding “100 percent membership enrollment” from the parents. Ainsley and her crew annoy Paige, demanding that she join committees and attend parties—so many parties. The women close ranks on her, especially when they learn that Ainsley’s husband was once Paige’s high school boyfriend. Then a death brings embezzlement, bribery, and adultery to the forefront. The stark contrast between the women’s perfect public personas and their messy private lives enhances the clever, brisk plot. Fans of Liane Moriarty, Mean Girls, and the Real Housewives franchise won’t want to miss this one. Agent: Holly Root, Root Literary.

After spectacularly losing her job, Paige Lancaster, a screenwriter for a popular detective series, moves back to her hometown of Piermont, CT, with her eight-year-old daughter. Settling into the community, Paige joins her daughter's school's Parents Booster Association, which is run by the beautiful but ruthless Ainsley Anderson, supported by her cohort of admirers. When Ainsley is found dead the morning after the Parents and Pinot fundraising night, questions fly over whether she fell down the stairs or was pushed. Now Paige must use her sleuthing skills to find the truth. Scott's (Wish You Were Gone) latest is a fast-paced story full of mystery, money, and murder. Amanda Dolan, Sura Siu, and Lana Joffrey perfectly capture the small-town pettiness and the air of snobbery that infuses the characters' every word. These women harbor many secrets, and there are plenty of reasons to distrust and dislike them all. VERDICT Listeners will be captivated, guessing at one possible suspect and then another. A winner for fans of Liane Moriarty and Gillian Flynn.--Elyssa Everling
